In this tutorial numerical simulation of lateral earth pressure calculation between backfill sand and concrete wall in Abaqus has been investigated. The backfill and and concrete retaining wall are modeled as two dimensional part . The below figures shows schematic of the example
The backfill material is modeled as sand with elastic,cap plasticity combine t with linear hardening and the concrete is modeled as elastic material. Two dynamic explicit step was used to consider three form of analysis base on the Sam Helwany book. The interaction between to part is assumed as surface to surface contact with frictionless behavior. Boundary condition is assigned base on the above figure.
In the first case Calculate the at-rest earth pressure distribution on the 3-m-high retaining wall assuming that the wall is stationary is done and the pressure -depth diagrams show at below
In the second case Assuming that the wall moves away from the backfill by rotating about the heel (point A), calculate the active earth pressure and compare with Rankine’s active earth pressure theory is done and the diagram shows at below
In the third case If the wall is forced toward the backfill by rotating about the heel (point A), calculate the passive earth pressure against the wall and compare with Rankine’s passive earth pressure theory is show at the below diagrams
The simulation has done by achieving three diagrams of pressure-depth . You can see some other results of this simulation at below.
